THE SHORT VERSIONPlan the cover you may need when taking a vehicle home after buying it.
01 / THE DETAILSArrange cover before handover
Buying a vehicle does not automatically insure it for the journey home. You need a policy that is valid when you take control of the car, with the correct registration and vehicle information. Check the handover time and allow a margin for delays.
02 / THE DETAILSCheck the details on the sale documents
Registration, make, model and ownership details should match what you enter. If the registration is changing or the DVLA record has not yet caught up, do not guess the vehicle information; confirm it with the seller and insurer before purchase.
03 / THE DETAILSWhat happens after collection
If you plan to keep the vehicle, decide how its ongoing insurance will be arranged before any short-term policy expires. You may also need to tax the vehicle. A temporary policy for collection is not a substitute for arranging suitable long-term protection.
GOOD TO KNOWCommon questions
Can I drive away straight after paying?
Only after the insurer has confirmed that the policy is in force, for the correct vehicle and driver.
Is a new vehicle automatically on the insurance database?
No. The insurer or its authorised reporting agent is responsible for insurance-record updates, which can take time.
