Borrowing a friend’s car

A practical checklist for a short journey in someone else’s vehicle.

THE SHORT VERSION

A practical checklist for a short journey in someone else’s vehicle.

01 / THE DETAILS

Start with permission and documentation

Speak with the owner and agree the journey before arranging cover. Record the correct registration and make sure the vehicle itself is suitable for the trip. Do not rely on verbal assurances that the car is “fully insured” to conclude that you can drive it.

02 / THE DETAILS

Get the cover period right

Decide who will be driving and when the car will be returned. If a drive could continue into the next day, choose a period covering that possibility. Short-term insurance may be available subject to underwriting, but it must be confirmed before you turn the key.

03 / THE DETAILS

Make the handover easy

Check fuel, keys, insurance confirmation, existing damage and a contact number for the owner. In the event of an incident, follow the insurer’s instructions and tell the owner promptly.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Am I covered because the owner is insured?

Not automatically. The driver must be covered under the applicable insurance terms.

Can I lend the car to someone else?

Do not assume your temporary policy covers another person. Check the named driver details.
