SITUATIONS / EXPLAINED

Collecting a car from a dealership

Organise the paperwork and insurance before a dealer handover.

THE SHORT VERSION

Organise the paperwork and insurance before a dealer handover.

01 / THE DETAILS

Agree the registration and collection time

A dealer may supply paperwork in advance. Use it to confirm the number plate, vehicle details and planned collection appointment. Do not arrange cover against an estimated registration if the car will be delivered on different plates.

02 / THE DETAILS

Confirm whose policy applies

Some dealerships offer a drive-away scheme; others expect you to arrange your own insurance. Ask what is actually included and for how long. If you arrange GreenOnMID cover, it must be accepted by the insurer before you drive away.

03 / THE DETAILS

Plan your follow-on cover

A temporary collection policy may help with one journey, but you need suitable insurance for continued use. Check vehicle tax arrangements and any requirements imposed by a lender or finance agreement.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Does the dealer automatically insure the drive home?

No. Ask the dealer for written confirmation of any included drive-away cover.

Can I use short-term cover for the journey?

Possibly, if the insurer accepts the vehicle, driver and proposed use.
