THE SHORT VERSIONHow a new full-licence holder can check cover before driving.
01 / THE DETAILSYour licence status matters
A learner policy and a full-licence policy are not interchangeable. Tell the insurer when you passed and provide the licence details requested. Some short-term products do not accept recently qualified drivers, so check eligibility rather than assuming an online quote will be available.
02 / THE DETAILSUsing a parent’s or friend’s car
Permission to borrow a vehicle is not proof of insurance. The owner may be able to add you as a named driver, or a separate arrangement may be considered. Make sure the insured person is the person who will actually drive.
03 / THE DETAILSBefore taking the first journey
Practise with a familiar vehicle and route, and read the issued schedule for any restrictions. Note that driving experience, licence type and claims history may influence whether cover is offered.
GOOD TO KNOWCommon questions
Can a new driver always buy temporary insurance?
No. Underwriting rules may restrict recently qualified drivers.
Does a provisional policy remain valid once I pass?
Do not assume so. Tell the insurer about the licence change and obtain the appropriate cover.
